She has hearts in her eyes - Part I

Digital art by me (FCT)

I was walking to work this morning like I do every Friday morning. I have my caffeine in my hand, bag on my shoulder, sunglasses on my head, dark jeans, light brown flats, and a black top. My hair is down today, long black silky hair, straight, and waving in the wind.

I finally arrive to work and go straight to my office. I am just confused from last night. Last night I had dinner with my best friend at an Italian restaurant downtown. We had a lovely time but I cannot explain or process what I saw. She claims she couldn’t see what I was seeing. I felt a bit out of my head in that moment. I am not sure what to think even to this moment.

I continued my morning on my computer checking my work emails getting the work day started off busy. It is currently 8:15 AM as I am starting to check my emails. It’s all just regarding the new policies in the company and what has changed and what is staying the same. As I was continuously scrolling through my emails, I noticed an email captured, “She has hearts in her eyes” in the subject line. I am very confused… This is my work email, what is this? I go to open the email- knock knock

I jump a little, startled, confused. “Hey! Have you caught up on your emails yet? I was wondering if you would like to go to lunch in a few minutes?” Carla said. I looked puzzled, wasn’t it about 8:30 AM? I glanced down at the time, “Oh, it’s 11:30 AM? I guess we can, sure.” I said in a puzzled tone to Carla as she looks concerned. “What’s wrong, Claire?” Carla said. “Oh, nothing, I just lost track of time is all. Sure, let’s grab lunch now actually. I could use a break right about now.” I told Carla as I went to grab my purse and phone.

We went arrived at a pizzeria, a mom and pop shop. We were seated near the front window facing the main road as the vehicles’ engines rumble, horns honking, people walking, people chatting. The area is super busy today as time gets closer to the festival. It’s such an exciting event. We order a large chicken bbq pizza with green peppers and two sodas. I honestly can’t wait to start eating this pizza, I am starving today. Me and Carla start sipping on our sodas and enjoying each other’s company as we wait for our pizza to be served.

“What was up with you today? You seemed like I startled you.” Carla said. “Oh, it was nothing. I have had a strange 15 hours and I saw an email with the subject line of-“ Claire was interrupted by the pizzeria server as he served them their pizza. The server swiftly sat down the pizza and asked if he could bring refills, we both stated we do need refills. I continued, “Do you not remember anything from last night? The eyes? The thing I saw? I don’t understand how you never saw it.” The server walks in on the conversation and proceeds to refill the sodas as we sat silently looking at each other, confused.

“You can’t keep going on about this again. You freaked me out last night, I almost tried talking you into calling into work today. What is happening to you is not normal. I am sure the company will understand your absence.” Carla said.

Me looking at her confused, “I don’t understand. I saw this person’s eyes or whatever you wanna call it. I saw the thing’s eyes! It was super concerning. The eyes had hearts in them but they were also bleeding! How could you not see them!?” I stated as I stood up staring at her with concern.

Carla looks at me concerned, “Sit down! You are making another scene! I cannot do this with you today. We have an important marketing meeting today at 2:30!”

I start to slowly sit down. I had completely forgotten about the 2:30 marketing meeting today! Oh no…

Carla starts eating her pizza slice and sipping her coke trying to forget any of this ever happened.

I look down at the table, “I am so sorry for acting this way, Carla. You are right, we have more important matters to focus on like this meeting at 2:30 today. I will pull myself together by then.”

We go about our lunch time eating our pizza slices and talking about things that are more lighthearted and uplifting. I just wonder if I should tell her about the email with the subject line with “She has hearts in her eyes” but now I don’t think I should….
